Twenty Statement Test (TST)

On each line below, write a different answer to the question, “Who am I?” As you write these answers, respond as if you are giving thee answers to yourself and not to somebody else. Also, write your responses quickly and in the order they occur to you. When you have completed 20 lines, you have finished taking the TST.

Interpreting Findings: Review each of your responses and try to code them into one of four categories: physical characteristics, social roles or group membership (social self), personal traits (reflective self), or some holistic sense of self (oceanic self) (e.g. “I am one with the universe”). What do your results say about who you are? Do you see yourself more in terms of in the context of groups and society (social self) or your personal traits (reflective self)? Most modern American students focus on their reflective or social selves. How about you?
